DET

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is a rapid, online English proficiency test that has grown in popularity in recent years. Shorter and more affordable than traditional exams, it allows students to take the test from the comfort of their homes and at their convenience. The test features an adaptive structure that automatically makes questions harder or easier based on student level using artificial intelligence technology.

Sections of the Exam

The DET consists of three main sections:

1. Quick Setup and Orientation: This section involves verifying your camera, microphone, and ID before starting the exam. There is also a short orientation period that provides information about the exam format.

2. Adaptive Test: This section is the main and scored portion of the test. It lasts 45 minutes in total and includes a variety of question types that measure the four main language skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Question types range from filling in missing words, naming objects in pictures, reading a text aloud, or responding to a question verbally. The difficulty level of the questions changes instantly based on your answers.

3. Video Interview and Written Sample: This section is not scored but is evaluated by the institutions you apply to. In the video interview, you are asked to speak on two different topics. In the written sample, you are asked to write about a given topic. This section allows academic institutions to gain a more in-depth understanding of your language skills.

Scoring and Total Time

• The total exam duration is approximately one hour.
  Scoring ranges from 10 to 160 and is given in 5-point increments.
  Scores are divided into subsections (Literacy, Conversation, Comprehension, and Production) to provide a more detailed analysis of proficiency.
  Scoring is performed in seconds by artificial intelligence, and results are released within 48 hours.

The DET became popular as a response to the need for fast and flexible testing, particularly during the pandemic. Today, it is accepted by thousands of universities and higher education institutions worldwide.
